Afternoon Tea @ Lovejoy’s

How to Have a Lovejoyous Girls’ Bay Area Brunch:

1) Go to Lovejoy’s with your favorite “Princess.”

2) Sit at your table with the sign “Reserved for The Queens.”

3) Look at the doiley covered table, the room filled with women, and be glad you left the guys at home.

4) Order the Queens Tea Service ($26.95). Shamelessly clink your cheerily mismatched teacups with your pinkie finger crooked just SO. Try the Tea Room Blend but next time stick to your fave, Vanilla Roobios.

Schmidt’s

How to Have a Disappointing German Bay Area Brunch:

1) Go to Schmidt’s.

2) Wonder why it is so empty on a Saturday around noon.

3) Wait a long time for menus or for anything to drink.  This will give you plenty of time to  check out the white columns, wooden tables, blackboards with drink offerings, and dark bookshelf with beer steins and other German knickknacks.

Mardi Gras @ Brenda’s French Soul Food

How to have a rockin’ Mardi Gras Bay Area Brunch:

1) Go to Brenda’s French Soul Food.

They don’t take reservations so go early and sign your name on the chalkboard at the front of the restaurant. We spent the half hour wait checking out the specials on the blackboard and Brenda’s expanded digs, like the wall of mirrors reflecting the huge crayfish mural on the opposite wall.

2) Order the Beignet Flight

You’ll have a hard time deciding which beignet to get so get them all! Plain, super sweet Chocolate, a Granny Apple one that taste like apple pie, and my favorite the savory Crawfish one that is spiced up with cayenne and oozing with cheddar cheese and scallions.

Custard French Toast @ NOPA

Ever returned to a restaurant and thought “I really should come here more often, like tomorrow”?  NOPA is that kind of place for me.

I’ve been a longtime fan of NOPA’s upscale food and casual vibe (pork chop dinners and late night flatbread and fries anyone?), so this Bay Area Brunch visit was long overdue.  This weekend when we found a parking meter right in front and plenty of seats at the bar, the brunch stars had finally aligned.
